University of Sydney Academic, David Brophy's new book argues that Australia is in the grip of a 'China Panic'. This has been driven from the top levels of Australian society, with new 'foreign interference laws', Home Affairs Department boss Mike Pezzullo telling staff “the drums of war” were beating louder, and Defence Minister Peter Dutton warning a war against China over Taiwan should “not be discounted”. The China Panic has led to a wave of anti-Asian racism.
Brophy argues that Australia's ‘get tough on China’ rhetoric can only be understood in the context of Australia's role in the region and its strategic alliance with the US, and is 'a prescription for a sharp rightward turn in Australian politics.'
This meeting will discuss the tensions with China, the imperial conflict that produces them and what we can do to oppose them.
