Yeelirrie: 50 Years of Resistance
Yeelirrie: 50 Years of Resistance
This is the story of a community who have fought off three multi national mining companies over five decades under 11 Governments in a fierce effort to protect cultural heritage, the environment and to keep uranium safe in the ground.
“Yeelirrie is taken from the word yulara which means to weep, like weeping in mourning. It is a place of sadness, of death and mourning. People shouldn’t go there. We were told not to go there.” - Kado Muir.
This collection of powerful contributions includes stories from the community and Traditional Owners at the frontline protecting Yeelirrie along with stories from the anthropologist who worked in the area in the 1970s, a former MP, a lawyer, a taxonomist, a union organiser and activists who spent years walking the country with the community.
‘Yeelirrie 50 years of resistance’ is a book of hope, celebrating the power of community action, solidarity, unity and resistance to successfully overcome the power and influence of multinational mining companies complicit governments.
“Mining uranium at Yeelirrie, we’re going to stop it. That’s the story for the Seven Sisters... the old people told me that story and I don’t want that mine to go ahead” - Shirley Wonyabong.
In this age of decarbonisation, green energy and nature related disclosures, this story is a timely reminder that land is sacred, nature is sacrosanct and determination to stand up and fight for culture and environment can triumph against the most insurmountable odds.
Be inspired, be educated and share this journey. Walk in the footsteps, in solidarity, of those who have led the resistance to leave uranium in the ground for half a century.
